Our Curriculum Design
At our school, we have carefully designed our curriculum to ensure that all pupils receive a broad, balanced and progressive education, regardless of our mixed-age class structure. With three Key Stage 2 classes, some children may spend two years within the same classroom organisation. However, our curriculum planning ensures that all National Curriculum objectives and content are fully covered without repetition or gaps in learning.
This is achieved through a comprehensive long-term curriculum plan that maps all National Curriculum requirements across each phase of learning. Alongside this, we use clear progression maps that outline the knowledge, skills and expectations for every year group. These progression maps are reflected in the learning pathways at the start of each topic, ensuring that children access age-appropriate objectives and are challenged at the right level.
While pupils within a mixed-age class may learn similar overarching knowledge, teaching is carefully adapted to meet the needs of each year group. This may include different recording methods, scaffolds, resources, worksheets or outcomes, ensuring that learning expectations remain appropriately ambitious for every child.
Challenge is provided through high-quality teacher interaction at the point of learning. Skilled questioning, discussion and extension opportunities deepen understanding and encourage pupils to think critically, reason effectively and apply their learning in increasingly sophisticated ways.
Adaptive teaching principles underpin our curriculum delivery. Teachers carefully consider the needs of all learners, including pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those working within different year-group expectations. This ensures that every child is supported, challenged and able to access the best possible learning opportunities, enabling them to achieve their full potential.
